Adult Topics 2005-2006
For
everything there is a season,
and
a time for every matter under heaven:
a
time to be born, and a time to die;
a
time to plant, and a time to pluck up what is planted;
a
time to kill, and a time to heal;
a
time to break down, and a time to build up;
a
time to weep, and a time to laugh;
a
time to mourn, and a time to dance;
a
time to throw away stones, and a time to gather stones together;
a
time to embrace, and a time to refrain from embracing;
a
time to seek, and a time to lose;
a
time to keep, and a time to throw away;
a
time to tear, and a time to sew;
a
time to keep silence, and a time to speak;
a
time to love, and a time to hate;
a
time for war, and a time for peace.
Episcopal Church of the
Redeemer’s Adult Topics classes takes place Sunday mornings at 10 a.m.
in the Parish Hall beginning September 18th through May 21st,
2006. Adult Topics combines lecture, small group discussion, and hands on
experience to engage adults in lively discussions about the Christian
faith.
This year’s
Adult Topics series, “For Everything there is a Season,” highlights
Old Testament and Apocryphal Wisdom literature. Wisdom literature includes
both biblical books that are well-known and obscure: Ecclesiastes,
Proverbs, Job, the Wisdom of Solomon, and Ecclesiasticus.
It addresses the challenges and joys of everyday life, and reflects
the lives of generations who have lived life and lived it fully.
Wisdom literature
contains both the sage words of those who have known both the heights of
joy and the abyss of sorrow. It gives practical suggestions about how to
live everyday lives of faith and compassion. For everything there is a
season (Ecc 3:1-8) and each of these seasons of life will be explored
through the lens of concrete experiences. This year’s Adult Topics will
focus on how an everyday faith intersects with scripture, the sacraments,
family relationships, diverse faith communities, contemporary issues of
violence, the arts, the workplace, and the voices of our youth.
